As in all cultures, a monetary system is important to an area's economic well-being. It allows for greater leveraging than simple bartering (though bartering has its own roleplaying merits) and greater access to luxury goods via trade. In Valesk, we keep to a simple system of currency with a familiar, easy to understand guideline to make roleplaying the exchange of money easy. Though keep in mind some kingdoms on Valesk do not use coinage as a trade source and rather use bartering!
Coins on the Isle of Valesk are called Tokens.
1 Copper Token is roughly equivalent to the purchasing power of $1 USD.
There are 100 Copper Tokens in 1 Silver Tokens.
There are 20 Silver Tokens in 1 Gold Token.
Therefore, 1 Silver Token is roughly equal to $100 and 1 Gold Token is roughly equal to $2000.
Below are some examples of prices for roleplay purposes; these examples are not the end all, be all, but represent a basic idea of the prices of things in order to provide players with an understanding of what or how much they are able to obtain in comparison to how much they make from their IC jobs.
Most dealings on the island should be concluded with mainly Copper or Silver Tokens; Gold Tokens are meant to be rare. That being said, we encourage players to barter, using either items or their own skills in exchange for goods, as this offers greater roleplaying opportunities.
Your character may arrive at Valesk with some money, though we ask that it be a reasonable amount; when coming to a new place, one might carry only a small amount in their purse, pouch or pocket; carrying an excess of coins may be unrealistic and might ruin the IC economy of Valesk, which all players should try to preserve. Lets try to be fair!
The easiest way to earn coin is by getting a job at one of the local businesses!
